Beckman Coulter, Inc. and Aviv Biomedical, Inc. announced an agreement authorizing Aviv to sell and install its Fluorescence Detection System on fielded Beckman Coulter ProteomeLab XL-A, XL-I analytical ultracentrifuges. The ProteomeLab XL-A, XL-I provides analysis of heterogeneity, stoichiometry, interacting/self-associating systems and molecular conformation. The system measures proteins and other macromolecules as interacting elements in solution, rather than in isolation, diluted or bound to a substrate. The Aviv Analytical Ultracentrifuge Fluorescence Detection System (AU-FDS) offers a complementary approach to measuring molecular interaction and aggregation behavior. The FDA has recently been examining the role of aggregation in negative immunological response and is requesting additional studies on drug candidates.
The fluorescent labeling of a single component in a mixture enables the investigator to validate drug lead efficacy by confirming that it only binds to the desired substrate and not to other components. With the AU-FDS accessory, the XL-A, XL-I’s core absorbance/ interference detection can be run sequentially with the fluorescence optical system. In addition to rigorous characterization, the XL-A, XL-I technology measures relative changes in the distribution of molecular weights and enables the collection of many simple yes/no answers, for quick and efficient investigations.
"We have worked closely with Aviv Biomedical to ensure that the accessory can be added to and validated with our systems," commented Paul Voelker, strategic product manager for Beckman Coulter.
Ideal for pharmaceutical and academic research applications, the AU-FDS can be used with all Beckman Coulter rotors and centerpieces. The accessory will be sold and installed by Aviv Biomedical, and Beckman Coulter will validate the installation. The ProteomeLab XL-A, XL-I analytical ultracentrifuges are for research use only and not for diagnostic procedures.
